This is a Token issued by Richard Shipden, Trade tokens for Hythe are not common. Although Hythe once had it’s own mint. Richard Shipden was mayor of Hythe and in 1814 Tsar Alexander of Russia and the Duchess of Oldenburg took tea with him at the Swan Hotel in the High Street. The family vault is at St Leonards church on the hill behind the town hall.
Hythe, was one of a group of five towns, the Cinque Ports including Hastings, Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich which
were deemed capable of providing the king with ships and men to protect the coastal waters around South-East England, and to transport
soldiers to the Continent (ship service).
There is no doubt Shepway council will provide a watching brief, but apart from a Mackeson beer bottle, what may we find? Maybe some
indication of a previous building , coinage, fishhooks, a piece of jewellery, or maybe even a cannon ball!

Once again Jane Clark is giving people in Kent a rare chance to visit the beautiful and historic setting of Saltwood Castle for its annual Open Garden and Plant fair on Sunday 18th September 2016. Steeped in history Saltwood Castle was the home of writer and historian, the late Rt. Hon. Alan Clark MP. Many thanks to all who attended the April Open Day.
