DIANA HARRISON
Artist, Diana Harrison works from a studio in Hythe, Kent, with the English Channel lapping on to the pebble beach 150 yards from her home, the White Cliffs of the Dover and Folkestone Coast a few miles away in one direction and the Romney Marsh in the other.
DIANA IN HER STUDIO
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Diana’s work is always experimental, which through the process of exploration in the making both in terms of the subject matter and in the choice of materials and techniques, often results in something enigmatic, ambiguous, disturbing
even. Whilst Diana has
found a way of bringing
an image together which
is formally successful,
the difficulty in pinning
down the story behind
the images often leads to
interesting conversations
which trigger dormant
personal associations
and inspire ideas for further work.
For Diana, the process towards finishing a piece is the centre of her artmaking. Something unexpected may have triggered an idea for subject matter;
a way of making may have emerged from unexpected sources so the finished work usually arrives unexpectedly after an experimental process where she tries to allow as much to happen as spontaneously as possible. Diana’s
artistic practice has been the focus of her working life since she moved to Kent in 2011. She was a mature student on the first part- time fine art degree course in Britain at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in the 1980s when her decision to go to art school interrupted a career
as a journalist on national magazines. Therefore the combination of image and text is important to her in her artwork.
